The Kamiq will go up against the Nissan Juke, Citroen C3 Aircross and Mazda CX-3.
At 4,241mm long, it’s only slightly larger than a regular supermini, and shorter overall than a family hatchback like a Volkswagen Golf. The higher ground clearance will give a more commanding view of the road, however, and the tall body will improve passenger space over a hatchback. The 400 litre boot is huge too.
To begin with, Skoda will offer three petrol and one diesel engines. The petrols are all 1.0 litre turbocharged units with 95, 115 or 150hp and the diesel is a 1.6 with 115hp.
It will be on display at the Geneva Motor Show in March and should go on sale in the UK later this year.
