Kingsbarns, in Fife, is famous for having one of Scotland’s top courses in the Links.
Even if you’re not a fan of the game, however, the pretty little village has much to offer.
Charming old cottages, rural seclusion yet an easy commute to Dundee or Edinburgh, and a terrific, recently developed distillery and cafe are just a few of its plus points.
One of the prettiest of its many lovely homes is the aptly named Retreat Cottage.
The two bedroom B listed property sits behind a high stone wall, with an external wooden shutter adding to the rustic appeal.
Inside, there are all the low ceilings, exposed stone walls and wooden floors you’d expect in such a home.
At its heart is a double sided woodburner. Encased in a thick stone wall, it faces into both the living room and kitchen, hurling its cosy heat into the cottage’s main rooms.
There are two bedrooms, the master en suite, and a further room that can be used for either dining or sleeping.
A lovely window seat in the kitchen looks over Bell’s Wynd and is a fine spot to read a book or just gaze out the window while dinner heats on the stove.
Outside, there’s a well tended garden, large patio and lawn. A summer house, shed and single garage ensure there’s no shortage of outbuildings.
