The owners of a Forfar hotel are celebrating a successful first year of business.

Don and Maria Stewart spent over two years bringing the hotel back to life following years sitting derelict and for them, the first year has been testament to that work.

Don said: “We’ve had a sensational first year, particularly when you consider how much work we did and the state of the hotel when we first started.

“The historic Royal Hotel has for many years been the focal point in the town centre and we take great pride and satisfaction when the local community congratulated us on our vision and determination to once again make the Royal a success.”

The family-owned hotel offers stylish comfort to guests and much of this first year has been spent listening to the feedback of their customers.

Don added: “We want to give people what they want, so we have to take on board any feedback we are given.”

The next stage of the Royal’s development is the launch of their rebranded restaurant – Bistro 33 @ The Royal.

“Our new chef has come on board with some exciting ideas in keeping with our ideals of creating traditional home-cooked food using fresh local produce.”

The restaurant offers breakfasts, lunches, dinners, high teas and our very popular afternoon teas, as well as specials and dishes to suit many dietary requirements.

And looking to the future, Don and Maria are keen to welcome more guests from across the globe.

“We’ve enjoyed meeting people of all different nationalities and backgrounds. And with the V&A opening in Dundee this year, as well as events like the Open, there is a lot to attract more visitors to the area.

“We can’t wait to give them the chance to explore Angus and further afield because the majority of the feedback we’ve had is that some of our guests had never heard of Forfar / Angus before staying with us but they loved the area when they were here.”

The Royal Hotel also runs popular tribute nights, has a function room that can accommodate everything from weddings to birthday parties, and even has its own private members’ leisure suite (including swimming pool) which can also be enjoyed by our guests.

Don said: “We’ve been really lucky that the hotel has been so successful so quickly and that’s something we don’t take for granted.

“It’s really rewarding work and the foundations have now been laid.  We look forward to seeing the business thrive and grow and become an asset once more to the town for generations to come.”
