A teenage Angus artist’s talent is to go on show before a national audience after success in one of the country’s biggest poster competitions.
Mirren Milne from Rossie School, near Montrose has been named the Dundee and Angus regional winner of the 2016 Edinburgh Festival Fringe schools poster competition and her winning work be displayed as part of a special exhibition at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh from May 24 to the end of August.
The free exhibition, open to the public, will see Mirren’s poster presented alongside 13 other regional winners, the top three prize-winners and 154 shortlisted designs, making it the largest exhibition in the competition’s history.
The competition attracted entries from more schools this year, with a total of 175 schools producing 4,979 eye-catching submissions.
Supported by Virgin Money, the competition was launched in 1980 and is one of Scotland’s longest-running arts outreach projects.
It is open to all five to 16-year-olds across Scotland and entrants are asked to create a poster design reflecting their interpretation of the Fringe.
Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society chief executive, Shona McCarthy said Mirren’s poster, bearing the message: For Every Dark Night There Is A Brighter Day, was an excellent illustration of the competition brief.
“I was thrilled to join my colleagues on the judging panel for my first Schools Poster Competition and was blown away by the sheer variety and talent on display, as well as inspired by how diverse and personal each child’s interpretation of the Fringe was.
“Mirren’s design beautifully captures the essence of what the Fringe is all about.”
The top three winners of the competition will be announced at a prize-giving ceremony and exhibition launch on May 24 at Dynamic Earth.
The winning design becomes the official poster for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and is used on mugs, T-shirts and other merchandise available at the edfringe shop and online.
