A man who confronted police officers with a seven-inch knife moments after he had approached a neighbour with another blade was today jailed for a year.
Police officers Scott Peters and Scott Hosking were at Rory McPhee’s home attempting to resolve a dispute, when he went into the kitchen and returned with the weapon in his hand — and lifted it in the air.
PC Hosking tackled him with CS spray, and the officers disarmed McPhee before arresting him, Dundee Sheriff Court heard.
McPhee had earlier that day been involved in an argument with his former partner over retrieving items from a house.
When McPhee confronted a passenger in her car, neighbour Steven Napier intervened and began to shout at him from his window.
An argument developed and McPhee went into his house and returned a short time later with a case containing a knife.
He then removed the knife from the case and approached Mr Napier’s window, before returning inside.
Police were called to the scene and found McPhee shouting in the street, the court was told.
They calmed him down and retrieved that knife, only for McPhee to confront them with another blade.
McPhee, 57, of Glenmoy Terrace, Forfar, admitted having a knife in a public place at Glenmoy Terrace on August 4 last year.
He also admitted a separate charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by shouting, swearing and acting in a threatening manner towards a teenager and attempting to enter a vehicle he was in, at the same location on the same date.
Defence solicitor Gary McIlravey said: “He tells me he didn’t have any intent to do anything inappropriate with the knife.”
Sheriff George Way jailed McPhee for 12 months.
