Lines re-open following death beside Angus railway

Lines have reopened after services were cancelled between Aberdeen and Dundee after a man was found dead close to the railway line in Angus.

Rail users were encouraged to find alternative modes of transport following the discovery near Lunan Bay just after 2pm on Tuesday.

British Transport Police has confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious.

ScotRail services between Glasgow Queen Street/Edinburgh Waverley and Aberdeen were subject to delays and alterations after the line was closed, and remained so for the rest of the day.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called to the line in Braehead at 2.16pm following reports of a casualty.

“Paramedics also attended however sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the Procurator Fiscal.”

Lines reopened at 11.24pm and trains were running as normal on Wednesday.

Affected passengers were told tickets were being accepted on local Stagecoach bus routes at no extra cost.

A massive queue of people gathered outside the railway station in Dundee amidst reports were to be no more trains arriving in the city for around three and a half hours.

ScotRail also arranged replacement buses for Aberdeen and Dundee passengers.

Apologies for disruptions

Phil Campbell, ScotRail head of customer operations, said: “We’re sorry to customers who have experienced disruption to their journey as a result of this incident.

“Anyone delayed by 30 minutes or more is entitled to claim compensation through our Delay Repay Guarantee. Just keep hold of your ticket and claim on our website or mobile app.”

Some passengers in Dundee were waiting more than an hour for a replacement bus.

One man, traveling to Montrose, said: “We’ve been waiting for well over an hour.

“There’s been an incident that can’t be helped, but it would’ve been good to have a bit more communication.”

An Aberdeen-bound traveller added: “We’ve been here since 4.45pm, so it’s been more than an hour.

“Obviously what’s happened is nobody’s fault, but it would be nice to have some water bottles or something while we wait.

“Some more communication and information would be good too.”
