New homes near Carnoustie’s famous Championship links have been given the go-ahead by Angus planners.

The 14-house development will be built on a former lorry park in Victoria Street, a short iron shot away from The Open venue.

Local firm D J Laing first brought plans forward for the 0.3 hectare site on Panmure Industrial Estate site back in 2019.

But the initial proposal generated an objection from environment agency Sepa over flood concerns.

The company went back to the drawing board and removed 30 apartments overlooking the golf course from the plan.

It leaves a mix of detached and semi-detached, two to four bedroom properties on the site.

There will be four affordable homes.

And the project has been given a delegated approval by Angus planners.

They said the proposal was broadly compliant with the council’s local plan for redevelopment of the area.

The revised scheme keeps houses away from the part of the site closest to the Championship course in an area prone to flooding during heavy storms.

“Part of the application site is identified as being at risk of flooding,” said the planners.

“Both SEPA and the roads service have reviewed the proposal and are satisfied that the houses are situated outwith the functional floodplain with freeboard being provided as an additional safeguard.

“Neither offers objection in relation to flood risk issues.”

The application also generated local support, including a welcome for the removal of the ‘eyesore’ lorry park.

The scheme is the latest stage in the near 20-year redevelopment of the area which has seen industry and the maltings replaced by new homes.

Almost 130 houses and flats were built on a site to the west.

Victoria Green business park project

Planners also noted the loss of the industrial land would be offset by the company’s development at Pitskelly.

It comes as D J Laing announced the start of work there on the company’s Victoria Green business park.

The firm forecast the western gateway site could generate £20 million of investment for the local economy.

It’s part of a larger investment plan which will see partner Persimmon Homes build around 250 new homes.
