‘Too many here as it is’: Readers react to plans for fourth Dundee McDonald’s

The fast-food giant is seeking feedback on the Riverside Avenue proposals.

Plans for a fourth McDonald’s restaurant in Dundee have prompted a mixed response from readers.

The fast-food chain brought forward revised plans for a new restaurant opposite Dundee Airport in March.

A public consultation event was held on Wednesday, with McDonald’s revealing a computer-generated image of what the new restaurant could look like.

The event allowed the public to have their say on the plans.

However, readers also took to The Courier comments section and the Evening Telegraph Facebook page to have their say on the proposals.

‘Riverside is a mess with litter as it is’

Several raised concerns about increased litter in the area if the scheme goes ahead.

User The Trumpet said: “Given the amount of litter around the other outlets in Dundee, there is no reason this outlet will be different.

“What’s stopping this litter being ingested into aircraft engines and causing a plane to come down in a residential area?”

Doreen Stewart wrote on Facebook: “No thank you.

“Last thing Dundee needs.

“Riverside is a mess with litter and dog poo just as it is.”

Wendy Mclaren added: “We don’t need anymore McDonald’s there is far too many as it is.”

While user POV100 on The Courier website said: “No, no, no. Welcome to MaccyDundee – AWFUL!”

Some other readers raised concerns about the traffic along Riverside Avenue.

Andrew R Pullar said: “I hope Transport Scotland have agreed to this.

“The amount of traffic this will cause, the inconvenience it will cause on the main route from Angus to Ninewells.”

Meanwhile, Toni Hoolachan’s suggestion to make the Riverside Avenue franchise a “hub” to service all deliveries in the city was met with some positive feedback.

He said this would allow the other franchises to focus on eat-in and drive-through customers.

McDonald’s would create ‘much-needed jobs for Dundee’

But despite the concerns, others welcomed the plans for the drive-thru, which McDonald’s says would create up to 100 new jobs.

Additionally, the company says it does “everything it can” to discourage littering.

Writing on The Courier’s post, Old McDonald said: “I think it is excellent.

“If people want to eat there then that is their choice.

“If they don’t they can pass by!! As for the litter, that happens everywhere.

“That is no reason to say no to this development on a piece of land which has sat empty for years and creating much needed jobs for Dundee.”

Kevin Brannan echoed this sentiment.

On Facebook, he said: “The people saying we don’t need one or the food isn’t good, it’s simple don’t go! Creates jobs”

‘Who made you lot the food police?’

And user The Sentinel hit back at those “whinging” about the plans.

They wrote: “Who made you lot the food police?

“It’s a burger restaurant for god’s sake, not a strip joint that’s being built.

“I’m glad you lot are not on the licensing committee nothing would ever get built in Dundee.”

It comes after plans to refurbish the McDonald’s restaurant at Camperdown were approved.

And an application to erect Wendy’s signage at the former Friday’s and Go unit on Reform Street has been approved.
