Verdict: St Johnstone were on top but Aberdeen deserved point in end

St Johnstone were well in control of this game at one stage but by the end Aberdeen deserved their 1-1 draw.

After former Perth player Stevie May was denied what was a weak penalty claim for the Dons, Saints took the lead on 14 minutes with a well-worked goal from a corner.

The ball was delivered from the right by Liam Craig and frontman David McMillan was perfectly placed to ghost in at the near post to head home from just a few yards out.

It was poor defending from the visitors and terrific opportunism from the unmarked Saints frontman.

The Dons just didn’t look threatening at all in the first half and could probably count themselves fortunate to be just one behind at the break.

Just a couple of minutes into the second half, Matty Kennedy of the home side had a claim for a spotkick when he went down under a challenge from Aberdeen’s Andy Considine but referee Willie Collum waved play on.

The Dons almost levelled on 52 minutes when space opened up for Gary Mackay-Steven but his well-struck shot was headed off the line by Jason Kerr.

The visitors had finally woken up and got the goal they just deserved on 69 minutes.

St Johnstone’s Blair Alston chopped down Mackay-Steven inches outside the box and up stepped Niall McGinn to float a beautiful freekick into the net to make it 1-1.

It looked like the hosts would quickly regain their lead when Alston found himself in the clear inside the box but his shot struck Lewis and spun away to safety.

It was a much-improved second-half display from the Pittodrie men, though, and both teams probably got what they deserved – a point.
