Two Monifieth homes have been badly damaged in a fire that caused traffic chaos this evening.
Emergency crews rushed to Milton Place on Monday at about 4.50pm.
The blaze is thought to have started in a semi-detached house before spreading through the loft to the adjoining property.
It is believed no one has been injured but both homes have sustained significant damage.
, of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Crews were mobilised to a report of a fire to the rear of one of the properties.
“Crews who attended found quite a well-developed fire which has subsequently spread to a neighbouring property and into the roofspaces as well.”
He added: “The crews worked very hard in confined spaces with difficult access to make sure the fire didn’t go any further.”
Group commander Symon continued: “There are no injuries reported at this time and our activities are very much focused on checking for further fire spread.
“Hats off to the firefighters in attendance who have worked very hard to limit the extent of this incident.”
Firefighters could be seen removing roof tiles and charred debris from the rear of the properties. They are expected to remain at the scene for some time to ensure there are no flare-ups.
One local resident, who asked not to be named, said her thoughts were with the residents of the two homes.
She said: “I don’t know them, but I live nearby.
“There’s never a good time for it to happen, but a fire so close to Christmas is everyone’s nightmare. I’m just glad to hear that no one was hurt.”
Seven fire and rescue appliances were called to the scene and the main Ferry Road was taped off by police.
A fire and rescue spokeswoman said: “We got the call at 4.52pm. We are still in attendance. We have five appliances there plus special appliances.”
A police spokesman said the force is providing assistance.
He added: “We were called by the fire service. Officers are at the scene.”
There is heavy traffic on the surrounding streets. Vehicles are being redirected both ways on Ferry Road.
Traffic heading towards Monifieth is being sent along Guthrie Terrace towards Strathmore Street, with drivers heading west through Monifieth being sent up Grange Road.
Our Monifieth posted to Facebook: “Ferry Road closed at Milton car wash (both directions).
“Grange Road junction open to traffic travelling from and towards the High Street. Fire service attending an incident. Balgillo Road heavy with traffic.”
