The family of an Arbroath man found dead following a five-day search have paid tribute to the local community for the support shown they have been shown following the tragedy.
Police have confirmed that the body found in an area of land at the back of Demondale Road in the Angus town has been formally identified as that of Bailey Menmuir.
Former Arbroath High pupil Bailey, also known as Bailey Mearns, had last been seen at his home in Strathairlie Avenue in Arbroath at around 7am on Monday.
His body was discovered on Friday afternoon following a morning of intense activity in the town.
A family statement issued through police on Monday reads: “Maureen, Debbie and Marc would like to thank all those who shared the appeal and everyone on social media for their kind words, we are overwhelmed by how many people were thinking of him.
“We would now ask for privacy at this time as we try to come to terms with our loss, thank you.”
Bailey’s death sent shock waves across the Angus community at the weekend with one friend describing him as “one of the greatest guys” he had ever met.
Bailey, a mechanic, played amateur football and had just started a new job in the offshore industry.
On Friday night, members of the local community gathered in St Andrew’s Church to share their memories of him. It was said to be “standing room only”.
Football clubs across the county also held minute’s silences in memory of Bailey on Saturday.
