Four people have been arrested following a disturbance in Arbroath on Saturday.
One man was also taken to Arbroath Infirmary with a head injury.
It is alleged a hammer was involved in the attack although police gave limited details.
Sidney Street in the town was blocked off and witnesses said there was a large police presence at the scene at around 5pm including officers in riot gear.
Two men aged 35 and another aged 39 were taken into custody while a woman aged 31 was also apprehended.
Police Scotland would not divulge any further details about the nature of the incident but a spokesperson said enquiries are continuing.
