An Angus teenager has been named a winner in the British Education Awards (BEA).

Dundee High School pupil Ethan McColgan triumphed in the Scotland National 5 category.

Ethan, 16, from Forfar, was nominated following his remarkable performance in the 2019 SQA exams, in which he scored the highest, or joint highest, marks in the country in N5 maths, English, history, French and economics.

His five-star feat came courtesy of perfect scores of 100% in all but economics, in which he scored 96%.

Overall, he achieved a clean sweep of eight grade A band 1 passes at an average of 97.6%.

The awards also take into account extracurricular achievements and activities.

Ethan’s included running successes, as well as mentoring and campaigning to raise awareness of anaphylaxis and the importance of correct food labelling for those affected with severe food allergies.

Speaking after the achievement was announced at a ceremony in Manchester, S5 pupil Ethan said: “I feel really honoured to have won a British Education Award, especially in the presence of so many hard-working and driven students from all across the UK.

“It was inspiring to see all they had achieved and I feel very privileged to have won.”

The modest all-rounder was praised by Dundee High School rector Lise Hudson, who said: “Along with his sporting talent and eye for enterprise he is a young man with outstanding potential who wears his success lightly.”
