Man in hospital as serious A90 Mearns crash causes huge disruption to transport system

A man was taken to hospital on Tuesday following a serious crash which closed part of the main road from Aberdeen to Dundee.

The A90 was shut southbound at Fordoun, just north of Laurencekirk, following the collision involving a white van and a Müller milk tanker which happened around 9.20am.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were sent to the scene following a series of 999 calls.

The vehicles involved in the collision.

The accident left milk spilled across the busy road and the van a crumpled wreck.

The driver of the van had to be cut free by firefighters using hydraulic gear after he was trapped in the vehicle.

He was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment. The extent of his injuries were not known last night.

The accident caused major disruption to traffic throughout the day with debris strewn across the carriageway and local diversions put in place.

Accident investigators were in attendance in the afternoon.

Police officers were also seen walking along both sides of the carriageway.

A police spokeswoman said: “Police were called around 9.20am to the A90 southbound at Fordoun following a crash between a van and an HGV.

“A man has been taken to hospital for treatment.”

Motorists were being redirected on to the A92 Stonehaven to Dundee coastal road.

Traffic was heavy on the route between Inverbervie and Montrose, as well as on the country roads in the area.

Megabus services and Stagecoach East Scotland services through Angus and the Mearns were also delayed as a result of the diversions.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received a call at 9.20am to attend a road traffic collision on the A90 near Fordoun.

“We dispatched two ambulances and our trauma team to the scene.

We transported one male patient to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.”

A fire and rescue spokeswoman said four appliances – from Stonehaven, Laurencekirk, Montrose and North Anderson Drive in Aberdeen – were sent to the scene at 9.30am.

She said: “We were in attendance.

“Two lorries were involved and the equipment in use was hydraulic rescue equipment.”

Traffic Scotland was advising motorists to avoid the route and allow extra time for their journey.
