Brechin groups have rallied to retain the City Hall as a viable community facility.
Following the opening of the town’s £26 million showpiece community campus, locals were angered at the prospect of the town centre attraction shutting after Angus Council said it could not afford to keep the hall running.
The authority had signalled its intention to meet with locals in the hope community use could continue and that ambition took a major step forward at a well-attended public meeting.
A target of the end of May has now been set for a community-led group to take over its running.
A spokesperson said: “After a positive public meeting at the City Hall, it has been agreed by those who attended that the community of Brechin would go ahead with taking on the management of the City Hall after May 31.
“To go ahead with this project a committee will need to be formed and constituted.
“There is to be a meeting on April 25 at 7pm at the City Hall to elect the committee members and adopt a constitution.
“Any member of the public who is interested in supporting the group or to be part of the committee, please come along to the meeting on the 25th April.”
