A cyclist has died following an accident in the Angus village of Auchmithie.

Tansy Lee, 61, a former Royal Marine living in the Arbroath area, was found before 7.30am on Friday by a local woman, who contacted the emergency services.

He had suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was found outside the old Auchmithie School House.

Local residents reported the sound of sirens  as several police vehicles arrived in the normally quiet former fishing village, near Arbroath.

Police accident investigators closed the road as they worked to establish the full circumstances.

A spokesman said they were not looking for any other vehicles in connection with the death.

One village resident, who did not want to be named, said: “There is a great sadness that somebody has lost their lives doing one of the only things we are allowed to do for pleasure at this time.”

She said the man was found on an “open stretch of the road” and there appeared to be no initial signs that another vehicle had been involved.

“You can pick up a bit of speed on that hill on a bike. Nobody knows if he fell off or was hit by somebody.

“It is a great tragedy. We are all terrified to go outside in case we catch something, but you never know in this life.”

Arbroath councillor Brenda Durno, SNP, said she was “horrified to hear the news.

“People are enjoy getting out on their bike for a bit of exercise just now, and for this to happen is just tragic,” she said.

She said she would be calling for more cycle paths in the area when the pandemic crisis is over.

“I want to make this area safer for cyclists and walkers. My thoughts are with this man’s family at this difficult time,” she added.

Sergeant William Strachan, of the Dundee Road Policing Unit, said: “Our thoughts remain with Mr Lee’s family at this sad time.

“Enquiries into the exact circumstances are ongoing, however we are not looking for any additional vehicles or individuals in connection with the incident. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
