A budding Angus designer has won a national competition with his vision of the ideal home.
Monikie Primary School pupil Murray Garness was the winner of the eight to 12-year-old category in the competition run by Dundee and Aberdeen architectural practice Halliday Fraser Munro which drew more than 400 entries from across the UK.
Twelve-year-old Murray captured the eye of the experts with his whimsical design for an ever-expanding house and said the success had made up for missing out on the last part of P7 due to the coronavirus crisis.
“This means a lot because I, and many other people, missed out half of our final year of primary, and doing fun things like this is what I will remember of my years at primary school,” he said.
One of Halliday Fraser Munro’s architects created Murray’s design as a 3D model on screen as part of his prize in the online competition.
In the same category, eight-year-old Layla Parsons of Edzell Primary and Teigan Farley, 11, also from Monikie school were runners-up.
Adam Barnett, 7, of Strathmartine Primary was a runner-up in the under-8 competition for his rainbow-clad house honouring the NHS.
Company managing director, David Halliday said: “The quality of entries was excellent and ranged from tree houses to log cabins, Lego houses and cantilevered structures.
“It was a huge disappointment to us that we were unable to offer our usual programme of work experience for pupils considering a career in architecture and planning.
“The work experience portal was our way of making sure we could still offer support and encouragement to these young adults. It also gave us an opportunity to give younger pupils the chance to try out their design skills.”
