The funeral has taken place of well-known Angus businessman Bill Lakie, known to generations of Arbroathians through his decades-long ownership of JB Craig china shop in Millgate.
Born in Bonkle, Lanarkshire, Mr Lakie began his working career as an apprentice optician before an RAF call-up in 1946.
As an instrument repairer his service included a ten-month spell stationed at Changi in Singapore.
Following demob, he started in the family china business at the foot of the Angus town’s West Port and retired more than half a century later on the sale of it in 1989.
Tributes to Mr Lakie, who was 92, have included many from locals and exi-pats around the globe, whose purchases of wedding china and other gifts remain in use today.
Over the years, Mr Lakie was associated with many organisations in the Angus town, including the Scouts, Arbroath Male Voice Choir and the popular Minstrels.
He was also a long-time fan of Arbroath FC and a Lichties season ticket holder into his 80s.
A dedicated Rotarian, he joined the town club in 1963 and held a number of convener roles before becoming vice-president in 1979/80 and serving as president the following year.
He was honoured with a certificate marking 50 years of Rotary service in 2014.
In later years, Mr Lakie went on to become an enthusiastic member of Arbroath Probus Club, maintaining the lifelong characteristic of taking an active involvement in any group he was associated with.
His other interests included caravanning, golf and bowls.
A proud grandfather and gread-grandfather, Mr Lakie is survived by his wife, Margaret, with whom he also enjoyed extensive foreign travels to countries including America, Canada and China, daughter, Sheena and son, Ian.
