A safety campaigner has warned there will be a serious incident unless action is taken at an Angus crossroads.
Alan Berg posted footage of the terrifying moment a driver took a leap of faith and drove straight through the crossroads.
And he has shared other videos with The Courier, including that of a red van skidding sideways to the junction in wet weather — with the driver barely pausing his conversation on a mobile phone.
Mr Berg, who has lived in Muirdrum since 1987, said he uploaded the video to social media to highlight safety issues at the junction, which, he added, had been the scene of several accidents and near misses over the years.
The latest footage showed a lorry pulling up and waiting at the Muirdrum crossroads when a white van overtakes it and doesn’t stop to give way – a manoeuvre described as “suicidal” and “ridiculous”.
Mr Berg has also shown the Courier footage of two other incidents which previously happened at the crossroads – one of a blue car going straight across the crossroads at speed just seconds after a cyclist has passed by; and a red van dramatically skidding to a halt over the crossroads after the driver — who was speaking on his mobile phone — suddenly realised it was a give way.
A stop sign at the crossroads was removed after the A92 dual carriageway was opened in 2005 and Mr Berg has called for a rethink on the current set-up.
It is understood that Angus Council was already in the process of looking to carry out a review at the crossroads later this year – before the latest incident was flagged up.
Mr Berg said: “I have lived in the village since 1987 and have seen dozens of accidents over the years and tended to a few serious ones before the new dual carriageway opened.
“I have witnessed drivers speeding towards the crossroads from Forfar and Carnoustie and not stopping but going straight over.
“One time a vehicle just missed a girl on horseback.
“Another time a red van was speeding towards the crossroads from the Carnoustie side.
“It braked and skidded sideways over the crossroads — the driver was still on his mobile phone.
“I would like to see the stop sign reinstated which was removed by the roads department when the new dual carriageway was opened.
“I would also like to see better signage – something to slow down drivers coming from each side of the crossroads.
“I also believe there will be a serious incident if this falls on deaf ears.
“It has been one too many near misses I have witnessed and that’s why I felt the only way to bring it to the attention of those in power was by social media.”
Mr Berg, who works from home, said the incident he uploaded last week was “one of the worst yet”.
The footage was passed to the police who launched an investigation to find the driver responsible for the risky manoeuvre.
Many joined in the debate on social media – describing the driver as an “idiot” – and speaking of the fact that anyone driving up the Muirdrum road would have had “no chance” if the van had driven out in front of them.
A council spokesperson said: “We understand that there are concerns raised by the recent incident. It would be inappropriate for us to comment further as the incident is subject to a police investigation.”
