A new charity has started up in Arbroath to continue the work of a local church in the south of Malawi.
St Andrew’s Church in Arbroath has supported work in Malawi alongside the charity Aquaid Lifeline Fund since 2007.
They decided to use the money raised for the trip to fund the building of a day care and residence for the most at-risk orphan children at Thyolo and a residence for the already opened day care at Kambilonjo.
Each of these centres are fully up and running and care for over 300 children, providing nursery care, education, food and training and further education for the older young people.
Charis Bowie, chairman of the Dalitso Project, said: “Until now the project has been under the umbrella of St Andrew’s Church with the congregation supporting the fundraisers and the Sponsor Children project.
“However, it has come to the point where the project has expanded to such a size that it has been decided that, although the church will continue to support Malawi, it is in its best interests, to form its own charity.
“Dalitso means blessing in Chichewa, the language of Malawi.
“It was chosen as the project aimed to bless the people of Malawi and the group has found that they were blessed by the people in return.
“The Dalitso Project will continue to fundraise, run the Sponsor Children project, collect and send containers of aid to be distributed to the most at risk.”
To mark the beginning of this new project, the trust is holding an open day for current supporters and for anyone who would like to find out more about the charity on Sunday at OBs on the West Port from 12-4pm.
