A devastated Angus husband has spoken of the loss of his “rock” after his 54-year-old wife’s tragic weekend death.
Popular Arbroath primary school dinner lady Margaret McCann was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning after falling through an exit door at De Vitos nightclub in Arbroath’s Millgate towards the end of a school holidays night out with a pal.
Despite attempts to resuscitate her at the scene and at hospital in Dundee after she was taken there, Mrs McCann could not be saved and grieving family in Angus and America are now coming to terms with the dreadful outcome of the accident.
Police were called to the nightclub shortly before 2am on Saturday and have confirmed that in accordance with such circumstances a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
Speaking from the family home in Arbroath on what was his 57th birthday, husband Peter said the incident appeared to have been a tragic accident.
“The schools came off on holiday and she went out with a friend,” he said.
“They went back down the road later and were in De Vitos when she complained about being a bit dizzy and not well.
“She took a turn and fell back on the door, which opened and she hit her head,” added Mr McCann.
“We’re wondering now if there had been something wrong because she was complaining about dizzy spells. There was nothing else to it, she just fell back and unfortunately hit her head.”
Mrs McCann’s death will cast a shadow over the start of the school holidays for pupils and staff at St Thomas primary in Arbroath where she had been a popular kitchen assistant for more than 20 years.
“She loved her job and loved being with the kids,” added her husband, a mechanic with Tayside Contracts.
The couple, who originate from the Glasgow area, have two sons, one living locally and the other in Oklahoma.
“She was my rock and we’re just coming to terms with what has happened,” said Mr McCann.
