A drunken sailor whose Sunday afternoon Arbroath harbour antics with a boozed-up pal landed the pair in hot water has been hit with a £300 fine.
Scunthorpe steel worker John Sharp and Angus friend Richard Hartshorne, from Brechin, were on a yacht in the Angus marina last July when their mid-summer high-jinks degenerated into an afternoon of annoyance for passers-by.
Forfar Sheriff Court previously heard the harbour was busy with families and tourists as the men drank throughout the afternoon and became a “nuisance”.
Sharp appeared back before Sheriff Gregor Murray for sentencing having previously admitted breaching the peace by shouting and swearing, refusing to desist and acting in an aggressive and abusive manner at The Shore on July 12 last year.
Defence solicitor Keith Sym said Sharp’s personal situation had taken an upturn as a result of securing full-time employment at the Scunthorpe steel works.
Sentencing the 51-year-old, Sheriff Gregor Murray told Sharp: “I remember this case well.
“Lots of members of the public were strolling along and their peace was completely disturbed by you.”
Co-accused Hartshorne, 42, was previously fined £840 for his part in the incident, which included a second charge of making racial remarks in the custody suite of Arbroath police station.
His rant towards people of Pakistani origin was captured on CCTV, and at one point he was heard to utter: “Give me a gun and I’ll do my job.”
