Music lovers were treated to a cinematic spectacular in the grounds of a 14th Century Angus castle.
A long tradition of summer music at Glamis Castle continued on Saturday, when hundreds of attendees camped out on the estate’s lawn for an evening of entertainment.
The 2016 Glamis Prom was underpinned by the music of the British Sinfonietta Orchestra, conducted by former Grove Academy pupil Marc McBride, who studied at the Royal Academy of Music before embarking on a successful career in London and America.
While the orchestra’s theme was hits from the silver screen, the evening began with the French national anthem — a tribute to the 84 people killed in the Nice terror attack on Thursday.
After the poignant rendition, popular entertainer Ally Bally emerged as compere.
A firm fixture on the summer calendar for many years, the event made a triumphant 2015 return after a three-year hiatus, with the attraction of Elaine Paige and Susan Boyle drawing the crowds.
Although the hoped-for sunshine did not materialise, the weather stayed fair and most people had remembered to bring warm clothing with their champagne and canapes.
The prom’s organisers promised concertgoers 50% off the price of a ticket at next year’s event if they felt any rain.
A few hopefuls swore that they could feel “a wee drop” — quickly laughing it off.
Soul singer Mica Paris performed a memorable version of James Bond theme Licence to Kill, and the orchestra was joined on other celluloid greats by classical album toppers Richard and Adam, Glasgow vocalist Melanie Masson, and Arbroath-born West End star Norman Bowman.
A spokeswoman for the organisers said: “We were thrilled with the feedback we got from audience members.
“Everyone we’ve spoken to had a great night despite the lack of sunshine — we’ve already taken hundreds of bookings for next year.
“And whilst the big names may have been soul singer Mica Paris and award winning classical duo Richard and Adam, it was Melanie Masson and Norman Bowman that stole the show.
“We can’t wait to bring another great show to Glamis next year.”
