The community music group thrusting Kirriemuir to the top of the tourism charts with its commemoration of AC/DC rocker Bon Scott is scaling new heights with the next generation of talent.
DD8 Music, organisers of the town’s annual BonFest celebration, enjoyed worldwide interest for this summer’s 10th anniversary event which saw the unveiling of a bronze statue of the local baker’s son.
The annual rock event is a highlight of the group’s busy schedule, but DD8 has now embarked on a search for ten local Youth Scotland BIG Music champions to support in realising the dream of developing a music-based project.
DD8 Music development worker Graham Galloway said: “As a BIG Music Hub, DD8 will be looking to recruit ten champions over the next month.
“Aged 14 to 19, these champions will have to come up with an exciting music-based project that DD8 will help them facilitate.
“This could involve anything from putting on a gig for charity, to setting up an internet radio station.
“The champions will also be able to attend a residential workshop with members of the other 17 Scottish hubs also in attendance.
“There will also be visits to events that will feature key industry professionals and musicians on hand to give advice and training and all champions will be helped towards achieving an SVQ-recognised Youth Achievement award.
“There will also be the opportunity for some three-month paid internships in the music business.”
And with Angus school pupils also now back in the classroom for the new session, DD8 has restarted its weekly programme of free musical activities for youngsters.
Wednesday sessions take place in the community wing of Forfar Academy from 6 to 8pm and at the DD8 Music studio on Bellies Brae in Kirriemuir on Thursdays from 6 to 8pm, Fridays from 7 to 9pm and Sundays from 4 to 7pm.
Graham added: “These sessions will allow participants to work on their technique, jam with other passionate young musicians and learn new skills such as how to record music professionally.
“There is also the opportunity for those attending to suggest new activities that cover their interests and this year DD8 are looking at developing photography, video and DJing within the studio.”
