Two men who tried to take thousands of pounds of class A drugs through Glasgow Airport when they went on holiday to Spain have been spared jail.
Dane Carroll, of Gordean, Redford, by Arbroath, and Noredine Haddanou of Camphill Road, Broughty Ferry, were caught with cocaine at the airport in August last year – as they were about to jet off to Ibiza.
Carroll was also found with diazepam, more commonly known as Valium, during a random search of their belongings on August 8 2015.
Both Carroll, 26, and Haddanou, 28, were due to go on trial at Paisley Sheriff Court later this year.
But they struck a deal with prosecutors which saw them cleared of a smuggling charge in exchange for admitting they were in possession of the drug.
Carroll admitted being in possession of diazepam at the airport contrary to Section 5(2) of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
Both he and Haddanou admitted being in possession of cocaine on the same day.
In exchange for guilty pleas they were cleared of breaking Section 170(2) of the Customs and Excise Management Act 1979.
Prosecutors had claimed they “were in relation to goods namely a quantity of cocaine knowingly concerned in the fraudulent evasion of the prohibition on exportation of controlled drugs imposed by Section 3(1)(a) of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.”
After hearing that Haddanou receives £1,600-per-month from insurance payouts and £160-per-week in benefits and had sought assistance for his cocaine addiction with an organisation in Dundee called Addaction, Sheriff James Spy opted to spare both men jail.
He said: “I intend to impose a monetary penalty roughly commensurate with the value of the drugs on you at the time.”
Carroll, was ordered to pay £1,200, reduced from £1,600, while Haddanou, was fined £550, reduced from £675.
