Health chiefs have confirmed an outbreak of the potentially lethal E. coli 0157 infection in Angus.
The concern is centred on Carnoustie and The Courier understands one youngster is in a serious condition in a specialist hospital in Glasgow after falling ill last week.
A helpline has been set up for concerned families.
Parents of youngsters attending Carlogie primary school have been issued with a letter concerning the outbreak, and the town’s Peter Pan nursery has voluntarily closed while the incident is investigated.
NHS Tayside consultant in public health medicine Dr Daniel Chandler states in the letter: “You may be aware that NHS Tayside and Angus Council are currently investigating cases of suspected and confirmed E.coli 0157 infection affecting children in the Angus area.
“Possible sources and routes of transmission are currently being investigated, and necessary control measures have been put in place to prevent further spread.
“Those affected continue to be monitored, and have received appropriate medical treatment and advice.”
The letter adds: “Some strains of E.coli are harmless; however some types, such as E.coli 0157 are vertoxigenic, meaning they produce toxins that can cause illness in people.”
Parents have been advised to look out for symptoms including diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea and/or vomiting.
The helpline number is 0800 028 2816, offering advice to concerned families.
