Tributes have been paid to a popular young Aberdeen football coach who died in an Angus dual carriageway tragedy on Tuesday.

The body of 24-year-old Kieran Innes was discovered in his overturned car at the side of the A90 near Forfar shortly before 8am.

Police have formally identified the 24-year-old and have submitted a report to the Procurator Fiscal.

He has been described as a “true gent” and a “genuine guy who would do anything for anyone”.

A full police investigation into the incident was mounted and it is understood the crash may have happened some hours before a farmer discovered the silver car in bushes at the top of an embankment beside the southbound carriageway.

Police have yet to formally confirm Mr Innes as the victim of the crash but online tributes to the promising coach have been led by the Middlefield Wasps football club where he was a well-liked figure.

The club said: “It is with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes I write this, but today we lost our 2006 coach Kieran Innes in a car crash at the age of 24. Kieran ran our disability football.

“He was a genuine guy and would do anything for anyone.

“He loved all his players who will miss him dearly. I had the honour of calling this man my mate.

“The Wasps family has lost a true gent who will be sorely missed. Thoughts go to the family.

“As a mark of respect we will be doing a minutes applause at each Wasps game this weekend cos Kieran didn’t do silence.”

Aberdeen FC legend Neil Simpson, who played for the Wasps prior to his successful professional career, joined the online tribues with a tweet which said: “RIP. Thoughts and prayers to all Kieran’s family and friends. #onceawaspalwaysawasp.

Youth football clubs and other outfits from across the north east also joined the online tributes.

Police have appealed for anyone who was on the route and may be able to provide information about the accident to contact them.

A Tayside Division spokeswoman said: “Enquiries into the full set of circumstances of the incident are on-going and Tayside Division would appeal for anyone who may have information that could assist officers with their enquiries to contact Tayside Division on 101.

“As with all sudden deaths a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
