An award-winning Angus village’s community cat is gaining hero status after using up one of his nine lives in a recent brush with death.
Moggy Mylo has been a familiar figure in East Haven for several years, strutting his stuff around the hamlet which recently took the top coastal community gong in Beautiful Scotland’s 50th anniversary awards.
The friendly tom has made himself popular with locals and the many visitors to the well-kept village, but last month he was found lying badly injured in long grass at the side of the coastal path between Carnoustie and East Haven
The shocking discovery sparked a mercy dash after one of the couple who found Mylo flagged down a passing cyclist and borrowed a bike to cycle home to Carnoustie to collect his car before rushing the seven-year-old to the town’s Wallace Vets.
Sadly, the characterful kitty’s right leg was so badly injured it required amputation and he suffered other injuries including a lost tooth and broken ribs.
But the ginger and white wonder has fought back to top form and is now back to his role as the village boss — having already proved to the East Haven mice that the loss of a leg hasn’t dulled his hunting prowess.
Mylo has even been given his own page on the East Haven website and well-known community figure Wendy Murray said locals and visitors were delighted he had survived the scrape.
“He is such a character and so well-known by everybody,” said Wendy.
“He’s had a really difficult time and got an infection after the accident, but is now going back to the community garden.
“He’s even managed to catch a mouse, which we think will have pleased him no end. He turned his nose up at a clockwork mouse which we bought to try to keep him amused, but all we got was a bit of a superior look from him!”
Wendy added: “He’s getting his confidence back and that’s great because he is so well known and we have been really grateful for all the support from people.
“He was really lucky that he was discovered by the couple who then got him to the vets so quickly and I’m sure everyone who knows him will be looking out for him in the future.”
