A six-year-old Angus girl who was hospitalised after falling into a pool in Spain is showing signs of her “cheeky” self ahead of autumn term at her school.
Cally Simpson from Arbroath was pulled unconscious from a pool at the Villa Marina resort in Salou in 2014.
After spending a year in hospital, Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children and then Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, Cally graduated from nursery and started at Kingspark School in the city last August.
Her parents, Kate Miller and Steven Simpson, said their little girls is “loving” her second year at the Glenaffric Terrace school.
Updating their thousands of supporters on the Saving Cally Simpson Facebook page, the family wrote: “Little Miss Cally is doing very well at the minute.
“Stronger and stronger as the days pass by. A lot more responsive too.
“Cheeky chops is there. Still loving school. Got lots of friends.”
Cally was on holiday with Mr Simpson in Salou when the incident happened on June 23.
Since the accident, Cally has undergone multiple operations and treatments.
The five-year-old has had a Baclofen Pump inserted into her stomach which releases medication into her spine and helps her to move her limbs.
Cally is confined to a wheelchair and is unable to speak. She is fed through a tube in her intestine and undertakes a grueling regime of physiotherapy every morning.
Cally’s feet were left rigid in a 30 degrees position but have now returned to normal following treatment – something doctors initially thought needed another operation.
Ms Miller previously said she would not give up until hearing her daughter’s “beautiful voice” again.
Kingspark School was purpose-built in 2009-10 for pupils who have additional support needs, physical disabilities and medical problems.
Pupils are predominantly from Dundee, but some also attend from outwith the city, including Angus.
The school has approximately 175 pupils, aged between five and 18.
