A by-election will be held for the Angus Council seat in Carnoustie following the death of Provost Helen Oswald.

Nominations are being taken until November 1 for the position and the election will take place on Monday December 5.

The role of Provost will be discussed at the full council meeting on December 8, when nominations will be sought. This position is voted on by councillors.

Helen Oswald was first elected to Angus Council in 1999 and became Provost in 2012.

The SNP councillor announced earlier this summer she had been diagnosed with cancer last year and lost her battle with the disease on October 13.

Hundreds of people attended a civic funeral last week.

Before the Carnoustie vote, a by-election will be held for independent Arbroath East and Lunan councillor Bob Spink’s seat on Monday November 28.

A councillor since 2003, Mr Spink announced last month he was standing down from Angus Council with immediate effect due to health reasons.

Angus Council has 29 seats. Of the 27 currently occupied, the SNP hold 13, independent councillors hold eight positions, Conservatives have four posts and there is one seat each held by the Liberal Democrats and Labour councillors.

Nomination packs and guidance notes can be downloaded from the Angus Council website and can also be obtained from the Election Office at Orchardbank Business Park in Forfar.

For voters who are not registered and who’d like to take part in the Carnoustie election, applications to register to vote must reach the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) at Ravenswood, New Road, Forfar, DD8 2ZA, by November 16.

Applications can also be made online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

Any elector may apply for a postal or proxy vote at the Carnoustie by-election. New applications to vote by post and applications to amend or cancel an existing postal or proxy vote must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 5pm on November 17.

New applications to vote by proxy must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 5pm on Thursday 24 November.
