A Carnoustie councillor has hit out at motorists speeding past a primary school in a “rat run” through the town.
Brian Boyd will contact the council’s roads department after concerns were raised about the speed of motorists in Queen Street.
Mr Boyd claims it is used by motorists speeding past Woodlands Primary School as they seek a shortcut through the town at busy times.
Angus Council has previously carried out speed checks and reviewed the accident history of the street. The resulting analysis indicated no “significant” speeding problem but the council may now carry out further investigations.
Mr Boyd said: “The speed of motorists on Queen Street is a problem that rears its ugly head quite often. It’s a road that’s central to the town and some people will whisk up Queen Street if they see the High Street’s busy.
“They do this to take a faster route and then go faster on the faster route.
“People should be much more considerate, especially as the road goes past a primary school, which could put youngsters at risk.”
Mr Boyd said he would now request car speeds be monitored again.
“It’s been a renowned rat run for a considerable amount of time and I really do wish that the speeders would stop it,” he added.
“It’s a difficult problem because people who want to speed will probably carry on doing it and the police don’t have the resources to keep on checking.
“I am going to put in a request to see if we can investigate the speeds again and see what we can do.”
A Queen Street resident called on traffic calming measures being introduced.
He said: “I am most concerned at the irresponsible speeds that many motorists are travelling at along this once quiet residential street.
“There is a primary school at the top of this road and I that think that consideration must now be given to traffic calming measures such as those already in place at other schools in the town.
“In addition double yellow lines in Queen Street, and indeed across Carnoustie, are not observed and this creates a hazard for cars endeavouring to emerge from the side streets.”
An Angus Council spokesman said that a 20mph limit operated on the street at times that children were entering and leaving Woodlands Primary School.
The spokesman said: “We carried out speed checks and reviewed the accident history of the area following concerns in previous years about speeding vehicles on Queen Street.
“Survey results to date showed no significant speeding problem on Queen Street and there was no history of accidents.
“However, we would be happy to carry out further investigations should concerns be raised again.”
