An Angus newlywed who spent his wedding night in the cells after an off-licence bust-up was back at Forfar Sheriff Court.
Graham Leslie, 61, of Scotson Place, St Cyrus, previously admitted that on August 1 at an address at Carnegie Street, Montrose he shouted and acted in an aggressive manner towards his partner Margaret before he assaulted her by seizing her by the neck to her injury.
Defence agent Nick Markowski said that when the plea was tendered, he had informed the court that Leslie was soon to be married.
He said: “The wedding went ok, the wedding reception not so much. He spent his wedding night in the cells.
“He received a two month sentence but the couple are now residing together and have moved from Montrose to St Cyrus.”
Depute fiscal Kirsten Letford previously said that that the couple had been drinking together during the day of August 1 and Leslie went to buy more alcohol.
“He returned around 3.20pm, an argument ensued and he approached her as she was sitting on a living room chair and grabbed her by the throat with both hands,” said the fiscal.
“She asked him to let her go and shortly afterwards made her way to the bathroom to call police because she was frightened.
“She then went back to the living room to await the arrival of police and the accused then started shouting at her, acting in an aggressive manner.”
Sheriff Gregor Murray deferred sentence until December 22 for a criminal justice social work report and continued Leslie’s bail.
Leslie was accompanied by his wife Margaret to court.
Just a few hours after they were married in Montrose on September 9, Mr Leslie took offence to a throwaway comment in a local off-licence as he was trying to buy wedding night celebration cider.
A customer in Montrose High Street’s Party Time shop warned him the cider he was stocking up on would “give you some hangover” and Mr Leslie launched into a foul-mouthed tirade which saw him flung out of the shop.
Mrs Leslie then shouted: “You ruined my wedding day.”
After police were called, the pair spent their wedding night in separate cells.
Mrs Leslie was fined £200 for her part in the disturbance while her husband, appearing in court still dressed in his wedding suit, was jailed for a fortnight.
Afterwards Mrs Leslie complained: “I thought I would get to give him a kissie up here today but I didn’t even get to do that.”
