The organisers of Bonfest have said they are ‘devastated’ by the sudden death of man at the event in Kirriemuir on Saturday afternoon.

The death is not being treated as suspicious Police Scotland have confirmed.

The man, a 53-year-old, has not been named. His next of kin have been informed.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 1.10pm on Saturday officers attended a report of the death of a 53-year-old man at the Bonfest Festival Site near Kirriemuir.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and, as with all sudden deaths, a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”

In a statement the Bonfest commitee said: “The Bonfest committee is greatly saddened to announce that a man in his fifties, a UK resident, sadly died on Saturday, April 30 while attending Bonfest.

“The next of kin have been informed and there are no suspicious circumstances.

“Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this sad time.

“Part of the magic of Bonfest is that it attracts people from all around the world and of all ages so incidents like this are sadly going to happen.

“We as a committee are devastated for his family and friends.

‘Tragic that this happened’

“However, we know that he had been to Bonfest before, and we can only hope that they can take comfort in the fact that he was doing something he loved.

“It is tragic that this happened when we have been so delighted that despite a two years absence, the fans of all ages and from all over the world have returned in their droves to celebrate the music that they love.

“The town has been so busy with local businesses and cafes filled. Local residents have been so supportive and welcoming which adds to the great Bonfest experience.

The event brings together AC/DC fans from across the world and celebrates Bon Scott.

“The festival is run by the DD8 music charity with over 100 volunteers involved and is in its 15th year. The funds raised are used by DD8 to support young musicians across Angus.”

In a separate incident on Sunday, a band member from Razor Dogs was assessed by medics after apparently collapsing on stage in The Thrums.

Organisers say he was later able to return to the bar after being assessed.

Bonfest brings AC/DC fans together from across the world to enjoy three days of rock performances and to celebrate the band’s lead singer Bon Scott.

The main festival site has moved to a new location at Kirrie show field this year and will welcome around 1,500 fans.
