Angus Council has condemned brazen vandals who used a chainsaw to cut down trees in a local park.
Three trees were felled at Brechin public park in what the authority described as an “inexplicable act” of vandalism.
A member of the public even saw the chainsaw wielding culprit, but assumed it was an official tree-cutting operation being carried out by the local authority.
A council spokesman said: “It appears the trees, which are situated at the war memorial, were destroyed at some point on Wednesday December 14.
“A member of the public saw they had been cut down and later reported it to us after realising it was not the council that had carried out the “work”.
“A fourth tree has also been downed on the nature trail in Brechin.
“Indications are that all of the trees were felled by someone using a chainsaw,” said the spokesman.
The incidents have been reported to Police Scotland and the council has urged anyone with information to contact Police on 101.
The Brechin park incident is the latest in a spate of vandalisms across the county which have been slammed by elected members and local communities.
Newly-installed playpark equipment at the Hornie park in Forfar was targeted in August.
The cemetery at Kirrie Hill has also been the subject of complaints after reports that youngsters took wreaths from the war memorial in the aftermath of Remembrance Sunday, and a local family were devastated to discover damage to a loved one’s grave in a separate incident earlier this month.
