An Arbroath care worker’s car was stolen from St Vigeans Residential Home during her last shift.
The car keys – which were kept in the staff room behind a coded door – were also stolen, as well as a sum of money.
Police are investigating a sneak-in theft at the property.
Regan Young, 26, said her dark grey Nissan Micra was taken during her last shift at the Arbroath care home.
The car is essential to Regan as she was due to start a new job with an agency this week, which involves travelling around Dundee and Angus.
‘Scary in a building full of vulnerable adults’
The care worker went to the staff room with a colleague at 10pm on Friday, where they discovered the theft.
Regan said: “When we went down to the staff room, there wasn’t anything out of place.
“The door was locked the way it always is, because it’s got a key pad on it to get the key out of the lockbox.”
However, her colleague noticed her locker key was discarded on the floor and her bag seemed to have been rifled through.
Regan said: “I checked my coat pocket and bag and realised that my car key wasn’t there.
“I had to go upstairs to look out at the staff car park and my car was gone.
“So I went into the office and told them somebody’s been in the building.”
Regan had worked at the care home for over a year and says nothing similar had ever happened during her time.
“We just couldn’t believe it,” she said.
“I still can’t believe someone stole my car because all the doors were locked and the staff room is locked with a key pad.
“But they even locked the door back up and put the key away again. No one had forced the door and as far as I’m aware the windows were all locked.
“It’s not obvious that that’s the staff room either.
“I’m just totally baffled by what happened. It was a bit rubbish and a bit of a bad ending.”
‘What if they had bumped into somebody?’
The Arbroath care home specialises in residential care for adults with learning disabilities.
Regan said: “It’s a really lovely place.
“But it was scary as well to think that it’s a building full of vulnerable adults.
“To think there was one or more people in there that wanted to steal things – what if they had bumped into somebody?
“You just don’t expect something like that to happen.
“I’m supposed to be starting a new job with an agency travelling around Dundee and Angus going to different homes.
“But obviously I can’t start that now because I don’t have a car.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a sneak-in theft at a care home on Millgate Loan in Arbroath around 10.30pm on Friday May 20.
“A sum of cash and a car – a dark grey Nissan Micra, registration SW68 EWL – were stolen after the vehicle’s keys were taken from inside the home.
“Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information can call 101, quoting 4124 of May 20.”
