The new Angus owner of a rare three-wheeler says he’s thrilled the special sportscar will stay on Tayside roads.
Graeme Laird from Forfar bagged the Morgan Super Sport at Strathmore Vintage Vehicle Club’s latest auction.
The stunning 86-year-old machine was the star lot in the Glamis sale.
It now has pride of place in the Graeme’s growing collection of classics.
But the 68-year-old’s enthusiasm revolves around two-wheeled machinery so he’s excited to learn how to handle the latest arrival.
And he said he was determined to keep the Morgan local.
Morgan was the most sought-after and popular of Britain’s three-wheelers of its original era.
And the 113-year-old company is still producing a three-wheeler today.
Its wooden body is covered in steel and rests on a steel chassis.
So the Super Sport is a lightweight and nippy machine.
Graeme’s example has the highly sought after Matchless V-twin engine.
US talk show host and car nut Jay Leno has one in his huge automotive collection.
And the Emmy-award winner says it is one of the most fun cars he owns.
He described driving his example as “like flying a World War One biplane”.
Graeme’s car was owned for decades by Perthshire enthusiast John McDonald.
John travelled to events around the country in the Morgan, and was a regular at the SVVC’s summer Glamis Extravaganza.
Graeme said he didn’t want to see the striking red example head off to somewhere like the United States.
“The Super Sport is the one all the collectors want,” he said.
“I went along to the auction not knowing what level of interest there would be in it.
“I kind of knew John through the classic circuit.
“But I was looking for something nice so I knew how good this one was.
“It’s a work of art.”
Collection of motorcycles
Graeme served his time as an agricultural engineer in Forfar and has spent more than 40 years in the oil and gas industry.
“I’ve a collection of old motorbikes, mostly BSAs and Sunbeams,” he said.
And it includes a Second World War BSA WDM20 army motorcycle that saw service with The Black Watch.
“Having a three-wheeler is all new hat to me, but it won’t be a big deal to maintain it.
“It’s a car, but it’s very motorcycle-like so I’m looking forward to working on it.
“It’s a beautiful thing and I plan to enjoy it.
“I just want to carry on where John left off, it needs to be used.
“And it will be at the Glamis Extravaganza, I’m looking forward to taking it there.”
