Extensive flooding in Arbroath caused road closures near Ladyloan Primary School on Tuesday.
The dual carriageway near East Grimsby Street and the road continuing down East Mary Street was shut to traffic while engineers assessed the situation.
The flooding also resulted in one of the access gates to Ladyloan school being closed off but the school remained open as normal.
Pictures taken at the scene show residents trapped in their homes by the flooding, as well as school workers cut off by the road closures.
The roads reopened on Tuesday afternoon.
Photographer Wallace Ferrier said: “It’s caused big disruption this morning, drivers had to turn around or divert an alternate route to get to their destination. People were trapped in their home as well.
“There was heavy rain during the night but I’ve never seen flooding in this particular bit – it looks like there might be a burst pipe.”
“There had been workers doing some repairs to the road in the area and they had, ironically, been working on the flood prevention scheme.
“The waterboard are on the scene to view the situation.”
It is not known at this stage what the cause of the flooding is, however Scottish Water confirmed their sewer response was called out.
A spokesperson for Scottish Water said: “Following reports of heavy flooding affecting the road network in Arbroath this morning, our sewer response team is attending to assist the council and check on the sewer network in the area.
“If any blockage is identified, they will seek to clear this and assist with clean-up of the affected area.”
An Angus Council spokesperson said: “Roads and Tayside Contracts staff responded to the reports of flooding early this morning and assisted with closure and clearance operations.
“We are engaging with our relevant stakeholders while investigations are undertaken on site to understand the cause of this flooding.”
