They are renowned as one of the world’s most elite fighting forces, whether in the sweltering desert or Arctic tundra.
And now the public will have the chance to find out if they have the Commando spirit required to win a coveted green beret.
In a unique opportunity, 45 Commando Royal Marines are inviting tough guys and girls, endurance runners, obstacle course connoisseurs and those who just fancy a challenge to their base near Arbroath on June 24 to take on Commando Raid.
Facing participants will be a 6.4 mile, 16-obstacle course, in recognition of the Royal Marines being formed in 1664.
“You will get muddy and you will get wet – You might even question why you volunteered,” said 45 Cdo Warrant Officer 1 (RSM) Ross Wilson. “We can however promise that you’ll be challenged.
“The Commando Raid is the only obstacle course open to the public that is being run by real-life Royal Marine Commandos.”
The event will raise money for the Royal Marines Charity and the Woodlands Garden Trust, a living memorial to the Marines from the unit who have fallen since 45 Commando moved to Arbroath in 1971.
The garden centrepiece is an eight-tonne granite stone bearing the names of those lost, including the 13 fatalities suffered during Operation Herrick in Afghanistan.
It costs £45 to enter the Commando Raid with a limited number of early bird tickets available for £35.
