The family of much loved Brechin pub landlord Alan Renilson have paid tribute following his death on Tuesday after a long battle with cancer.
Alan Renilson was a familiar face to many in the Angus community, where he has run the Stables bar for around 15 years with his wife Joyce.
The 61-year-old died on Tuesday after battling bowel cancer, an illness his family say he tackled “head on”.
Speaking to The Courier his younger brother, Clark, paid tribute.
Clark, 56, said: “Alan was a larger than life character, everybody in the community had a lot of time for him.
“Alan and Joyce were due to leave the Stables at the end of January but Alan’s
passing makes the closing even more poignant.
“He’d had bowel cancer and battled it head on, he had the right spirit and loved life.
“During his treatment he had nothing but praise for the NHS and the staff at Ninewells for the treatment he received.
“Whilst we’re devastated the tributes from the community on social media have been unbelievable and a real comfort.”
Alan had run the bar on two occasions and was a keen supporter of Brechin City Football Club.
The club will be observing a minutes applause ahead of their clash against the Banks O’ Dee on Friday.
Clark added: “Both Brechin City FC and Brechin Victoria Football Club wanted to pay their respects.
“He was a massive sports fan and also a keen golfer who was a member of Edzell Golf Club.
‘True Brechiner’
“Throughout his cancer battle Alan maintained a positive attitude with a spirit to match.
“He and been supporting cancer awareness and research with a number of fundraising events.
“There is no doubt he was a true Brechiner and loved everything about his town.”
Alan is survived by his wife Joyce; his children Sheryl, Hazel, Adam and his stepchildren Darren, Ryan and Jordan.
He also had seven grandchildren.
His funeral will be held at Gardener Memorial Church, Brechin and thereafter at the Parkgrove Crematorium at Friockheim on January 12.
