Carnoustie garden fire ‘not suspicious’

A fire that destroyed children’s toys in an Angus backyard is not being treated as suspicious.

A fire crew was dispatched to Carnoustie on Tuesday morning following reports of a blaze in a popular residential area.

The single appliance attended in MacDonald Smith Drive and doused the fire, which took hold by a fence running adjacent to the back path at Barry Burn.

It quickly consumed the fence and melted children’s toys, stripping the paint from several youngsters’ bikes.

The occupant of the house, who asked not to be named, did not believe there was any foul play involved.

“I had just come down into the kitchen from upstairs and saw it had gone up,” they said.

“I don’t think there was anything going on outside before that.

“Everyone was safe.”

A spokeswoman for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: “We can confirm that we are in attendance at a garden fire at a property in McDonald Smith Drive, Carnoustie.

“The call came in at 8.35am and one appliance is in attendance.

“The crew are using two hose reels and one thermal imaging camera.

“There was no harm to members of the public and the fire is under control.”

A member of the public captured video of the dramatic fire.

Police Scotland confirmed it is not treating the fire as suspicious.

A number of Dundee rubbish fires the previous night were thought to be caused by heat from the sun.

Separate incidents on the Arbroath Road, Caird Park, Charleston Drive and Templeton Woods were called in within the space of two hours.
