The vision of how Arbroath’s new Muirfield primary will look has emerged after Angus Council lodged detailed plans for the near £8 million school.
Due to be started before the end of this year, the new school will be built on the site of the current school, occupying the existing sports pitches to the east of the primary.
Once the £7.8 million is complete – following a scheduled 68-week build project – the old building will then be demolished.
The authority’s application is yet to be determined by planning officials but education chiefs say the design seeks to create a new public frontage for the school which will reduce the need to access Muirfield through nearby housing.
Muirfield’s replacement is part of the latest phase of the wider multi-million pound Arbroath schools project which has already included the development of new primaries at Timmergreens and Warddykes.
Hayshead and Ladyloan are also being replaced, with a proposal to develop a shared campus for Hayshead and St Thomas.
A design submission for the new Muirfield building states: “The site location for the new school benefits from a largely undeveloped east boundary with mature trees and vegetation, this serves as a driver in the location of the early years and nursery.
“It is planned that all existing pedestrian access points from the original access on School Road are retained and incorporated into the new site design.
“The design of the new school has taken into consideration the proximity to the adjacent housing and this has informed the position of the building to ensure the maximum set back is achieved without impinging upon the boundary to the north and the sloped embankment to the east.
“The approach to the school for visitors and staff is via the new dedicated parking and drop-off area which provides direct access to the new public ‘plaza’ to the front of the school. This space has dedicated access to school, nursery and early years entrances. “
A new 60 metre by 40 metre grass sports pitch and 18 x 36m lined play area are included in the plans.
Public consultation included a school event in March 17 and positive comments have been made in respect of both the design of the building and internal layout.
One respondent said: “Great new future for the school, plan fantastic.”
