Angus has the “thanks of 2,500 Guides” in Scotland after allowing a sold-out national event to go ahead next month.
The Guide Association of Scotland will welcome a large swathe of people to the environs of Glamis Castle on August 26, for an event called Rise to the Challenge.
They will range from five-year-old Rainbows to adult members of the Trefoil Guild.
But an objection from a member of the public meant its application for a public entertainment licence had to go before a special meeting of the council’s civic licensing board, heard during the recess period.
Councillors heard committee convener Craig Fotheringham had “no problem” with coach traffic passing homes on the route, which was objected to by an anonymous resident.
It emerged concerns arose over use of the Kirk Wynd gate, in the heart of the village, but this was quelled by representatives who gave a Guide’s promise to use the main gate only.
A council insider said: “Living next to one of Tayside’s biggest tourist attractions, I don’t think a few more coaches will pose any problems.”
Council solicitor Tina Magson said: “Activities include five zones during the day and a ‘festival square’ where those attending will be able to watch demonstrations and performances.
“The five activity zones will be: nature, creating, survival skills, construction and engineering, and baking.
“There will be a marquee, a nine-metre climbing wall supplied and run by a qualified provider and a PA system and DJ at the event between 11am and 3pm.
“An ice-cream van will attend the event and there will be a workshop by Tesco involving a muesli-making activity.”
After dropping their charges off in the long drive at Glamis, the buses will park in Forfar, with cars given the usual parking area.
A representative of the Guide Association Scotland told the committee: “Thank you from 2,500 Guides.”
