A traditional fisher wedding will remain one of the highlights for visitors to this weekend’s Arbroath Sea and Food Festival.
The event has been re-branded from its previous Sea Fest name, and organisers have promised an even greater array of attractions around the marina area throughout Saturday and Sunday.
A new addition will be a 30-foot zip-line at Beacon Green, offering thrill-seeking visitors the opportunity of spectacular views across the sea, harbour and town.
Those preferring to remain on terra firma will be able to savour the Angus larder at its best with a number of street food specialists lined up to highlight the event’s new name.
At 2pm on Saturday, Jamie Scott of The Newport Hotel – 2015 winner of BBC1’s MasterChef: The Professionals – will be sharing a few of his culinary secrets, while Wee Cook will be doing cookery for children from 1pm to 4pm.
Then, at 12.30pm on Sunday, August 6, Young Scottish Chef of the Year 2016, Adam Newth of The Tayberry Restaurant, will be live in the Fishmarket Kitchen at 12.30pm on Sunday, followed by another appearance from Jamie Scott at 3pm.
Musical entertainment, a dance performance by Showcase the Street and hotly-contested strongman and strongwoman competitions, as well as a pie-eating contest are also on the menu.
Harbour master Bruce Fleming, a member of the event committee said: “We’re also continuing three Sea Fest traditions – the daily launch of the RNLI Lifeboat, the raft race across the harbour and, at 3pm on Saturday, the Fisher Wedding.”
The Abbey Theatre and Arbroath Musical Society have been rehearsing for the re-enactment of the traditional fisher wedding, a performance which was first produced in 2002.
The script was originally written by Anna C Stewart, a local lady of many talents, and with her sad passing in the summer of 2016, this weekend’s performance will hold a special poignancy.
The wedding portrays the customs of the Fisher Folk in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
