The victims of a double fatal weekend Angus road tragedy have been formally named by police.
Scott Mowatt, 31, and Paisley Bates, 26, both from Arbroath died after the Vauxhall they were travelling in crashed off the A937 Montrose to Laurencekirk Road near Marykirk.
Another man in the car remains in hospital having suffered serious injuries.
The vehicle was the only one involved in the crash, which happened shorlty before 11.30pm on Saturday.
The car came to rest in trees down an embankment after striking a stone wall.
Fire crews from Monifieth, Laurencekirk and Brechin attended the incident and remained on scene for some hours.
The accident spot was also the scene of a crash last July which claimed the life of a Montrose student.
The families of the two deceased said they did not wish to make any comment on the tragedy but it is understood Ms Bates was the partner of Mr Mowatt.
The road remained closed until late on Sunday afternoon to allow police accident investigators to examine the scene, and for the removal of the mangled wreckage of the car.
Police have made an appeal for anyone who may have been travelling on the road at the time to contact them.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Enquiries into the full set of circumstances of the incident are on-going and Tayside Division would appeal for anyone who may have information that could assist officers with their enquiries to contact Tayside Division on 101 (incident number 5027 of August 12).
