The most vulnerable and lonely people in Angus will be able to call on a new befriending service.
Care About Angus are set to roll out a new befriending service across the county as they bid to tackle the issue of loneliness.
Statistics released last September by the Scottish Government report Loneliness In Scotland showed that 13% of those over 65 feel lonely, and 20% of those who feel isolated believe they have no-one to turn to.
Some 76% of GPs reported that up to five patients a day come to surgery due to loneliness.
The Arbroath-based social enterprise employs 52 staff and cares for over 700 clients since taking over the home help and sheltered housing service from Angus Council.
“I’ve heard stories of an old lady going to her bank on a Tuesday to withdraw £10 and paying it back in on a Thursday just to have human contact.
Director Charles Goodall said he hopes the service will “make a difference”.
“It’s important to realise that anyone, of any age or social background can become lonely,” he said.
“I’ve heard stories of an old lady going to her bank on a Tuesday to withdraw £10 and paying it back in on a Thursday just to have human contact.
“We have taken on the work Voluntary Angus Action used to do on this and have a database of around 270 people who are looking for a befriender but we know there will be many more out there who could use this help.
“For those that want to become befrienders in their local area across Angus to reduce the feeling of isolation for others, they can contact us.”
Angus MSPs Graeme Dey and Mairi Gougeon visited Care About Angus to hear about their plans.
Mrs Gougeon said: “Loneliness is huge issue in Scotland and I don’t like the thought of anyone feeling like they have no-one to turn to.
“That’s why befriending is so important.”
Mr Dey said: “I have some wonderful examples in my constituency of how befriending works – with groups in Carnoustie and Monifieth doing a terrific job for those who feel isolated in their communities.
“But it’s fantastic to hear that Care About Angus are going to roll out a service on a widespread basis.”
