An Angus charity champion has hailed the “amazing” response to an appeal for goods to support Syrian refugees.
Former district nurse Irene Gillies said donations flooded in from across the district to a collection point at Brechin Cathedral.
The items will help to ease the lives of families living in makeshift accommodation as victims of the humanitarian crisis in their country.
Irene has led a number of local collections on behalf of Edinburgh Direct Aid, but said the quantity and range of goods handed in during the last week was staggering.
“The response was amazing and I would really just like to say thank you to not just the people of Brechin, but from all the surrounding areas because people were coming from other places with goods,” she said.
“These donations will go right to where they are needed, I know that.
“We received more bedding than we have ever had and a lot of clothing, which will help families out with winter now approaching.”
Local businessman Phil Jamieson took the Brechin donations for onward transportation to the refugee camp and Irene is confident the much-needed supplies will be there within days.
She plans to stage another collection early in the new year and hopes the momentum of the latest response will continue.
“With so many people coming in to the church and seeing just how much had been handed in I hope it will encourage the community, not just for this cause but for other appeals,” said Irene.
“To see so many people giving so much is a great thing and makes it all seem very worthwhile.”
