Police have issued a warning to parents after children were caught risking life and limb on frozen Forfar Loch.
There have been several reports of youths playing on the surface in recent days after a prolonged cold snap allowed a layer of ice to form.
PC Barrie Taylor said there was no way of knowing how strong or thick the ice was across the loch and urged parents to speak to their children about the dangers of going out on to the ice “before it’s too late”.
One witness described their horror after seeing a group of youngsters larking around on the loch.
“I have never seen anything more stupid in my life,” said the local.
“They could have fallen through at any moment.
“It doesn’t bear thinking about.”
Forfar independent councillor Colin Brown echoed the police warning.
He said: “Forfar Loch is so so dangerous.
“It’s not a playground.
“I don’t think we have a depth for the loch.
“Why would you risk your life?
“It’s not only your own life you are putting in danger but you are also putting in danger people who would try to rescue you.”
Forfar Conservative councillor Braden Davy said: “It’s very worrying to see reports of young people out on the frozen Forfar Loch.
“There’s no way of knowing how thick the ice is and it’s vital that people listen to warnings and stay off the ice.
“It makes no sense to risk your own life.
“I hope everyone will help spread the word.
“Just check with friends or family who may spend time there to make sure everyone stays safe this winter”
Police have also had reports of youngsters walking across the frozen ice at Keptie Pond in Arbroath during the recent cold snap.
