A tireless Angus fundraiser is appealing for 100 cyclists to commemorate the end of the First World War.
Arbroath man Ian Wren has set himself the “very special” challenge of achieving the number to mark 100 years since the guns fell silent.
Mr Wren is the fundraising manager for HorseBack UK which helps serving or past members of the armed forces using western riding, adventure training and equine therapy.
The HorseBack UK Cairn O’Mount Challenge takes place on July 28 and is a 54-mile long cycle from HorseBack UK’s headquarters in Ferrar, Aboyne, to the Army Reserve Centre, Montrose Road, Arbroath.
“This year is the fourth Cairn o Mount Challenge to take place and this one is very special,” said Mr Wren.
“HorseBack UK are looking for 100 cyclists to take part this year to commemorate the 100 years since the end of the Great War.
“We want to raise as much as we can to help those that have come back from recent conflict and are still fighting their battles.”
Mr Wren spent five years as a HorseBack UK volunteer and raised over £120,000 in that time before he was appointed fundraising manager in 2015.
The idea is to improve the quality of life of those who have been injured or wounded and are suffering mental or physical illness or disability.
Mr Wren said over £20,000 has been raised as a result of the Cairn o Mount Challenge since the first event took place back in 2015.
“I’ll continue raising money for HorseBack UK for as long as I can because it’s what I believe in,” he said.
“You wouldn’t believe how life-changing it has been for veterans – I’ve seen guys in here who are so sick they can’t speak.
“After a week at HorseBack it’s like looking at a different person.
“This is where the money goes and what it can do.
“It truly is life-changing.”
Mr Wren said anyone who thinks they can take on the Cairn should get in touch.
The event – sponsored by Deeside Vintage Attic and Williams Roofing in Arbroath – is now open for applications.
Anyone who would like to take part and more information should contact Mr Wren on Facebook or email Wren.ian@gmail.com
HorseBack UK was set up by ex-marine Jock Hutchison, who had served at 45 Commando in Arbroath.
The plan was to set up a business using American Quarter Horses and western riding.
After serving and ex-military personal visited the farm the idea of using horse work to help those returning from combat arose.
