An Angus man has been warned by a sheriff he is in “very serious trouble” after a court was shown graphic CCTV footage of his brutal headbutt on another man outside a local nightclub.
Lewis Dunn launched the early hours attack in the smoking area of Busby’s in Montrose in what Forfar Sheriff Court heard was an apparently unprovoked assault on victim Steven Pirie, leaving him with broken teeth and blood pouring from an injured nose, which may require surgery.
The 22-year-old accused will return to court to be sentenced next month following the preparation of a criminal justice report after his actions were branded “particularly nasty”by a sheriff.
Dunn, of Hill Road, Hillside, near Montrose admitted a single charge of assaulting Mr Pirie at the nightclub on March 26 last year by butting him on the head.
Depute fiscal Jill Drummond said the victim had travelled from Brechin to Montrose to go out with friends and around 1.40 on Sunday morning was having a cigarette in the smoking area of the nightclub.
The accused and his victim were initially seated near each other but did not engage each other in conversation at that point, the court was told.
“The witness then went back and stood directly in from of him (Dunn) as if to engage in conversation and the accused then lunged forward towards him and headbutted him in the face,” added the fiscal.
Dunn then walked out of the smoking area and out of the nightclub.
The attack was captured on CCTV and the court was shown footage of the incident within the busy smoking area.
The court was told Mr Rennie suffered a deviated septum and although he did not need hospital treatment at the time, still suffers from breathing difficulties on one side of his nose.
He also required treatment to repair three chipped teeth.
After viewing the CCTV footage, Sheriff Gregor Murray told him: “I reserve saying anything about this, other than you are in very serious trouble. This was particularly nasty.”
Sentence was deferred until April 19 and Dunn was released on bail.
