A huge sperm whale was found dead after washing up on a Tayside beach on Wednesday.
The 40ft mammal was first spotted on the shore between Monifieth and Barry Buddon at about 3pm and sparked a response from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), local coastguards and the Broughty Ferry lifeboat.
Fresh photographs show the whale with bloody wounds on its body. Rescuers initially speculated that the sea creature had suffered dehydration or starvation.
Though found in all of the world’s ocean’s, sperm whales prefer warmer waters and deep areas around ocean trenches. They are not common in the Tay Estuary.
Members of the public told to avoid the beach due to safety concerns with the carcass now a biohazard.
